High Point Furniture Market Spring 2011....Fabulous Fun & Finds

Twice a year High Point Furniture Market takes place.......it's ALWAYS a fabulous time. Between seeing what's new & what's hot, there is also the many extremely talented gifted souls one has the pleasure of seeing that make market so much fun. The best part of it all for me is that I get to experience this with my dear friend and talented designer, Gloria Blalock of Blalock Interiors.

Here you will find just a few of the exciting things and amazing people that one bumps into along the exciting as well as exhilarating whirlwind of the High Point furniture market. Come join me for the intoxicating ride.

Hickory Chair, one of the most talked about showrooms at each market, and as predicted, they did NOT disappoint.

Alexa Hampton's furniture collection offers style & class for modern living.

Mariette Himes Gomez collection is clean, refreshing that offers a classic and contemporary vibe.

One of the highlights was sitting down with some brilliant designers and having a comfortable, relaxed and funny (Alexa Hampton is not only designs gracious and classic furniture, but she is also quite the comedian) conversation with Alexa Hampton, Mariette Himes Gomez, Mary Douglas Drysadale and Gloria de Lourdes Blalock.

Thom Filicia's line for Vanguard (which their ENTIRE showroom rocked) is best put in their words to describe this man's amazing talent and style..... "Thom Filicia, a designer of sexy, hip and exciting environments. Mixing refined details with raw edges, blending industrial and organic objects. Perfectly balancing elements in unique and beautiful ways."

The ever so talented Thom Filicia, along with president of Thom Filicia Designs, Marc Szafran.

Barclay Buttera, the name and man, well he has it all. Style, class, charisma and charm.

Barclay Buttera Lifestyle Showroom is always exceptional to visit, for the stylishness that this man creates is extraordinary. As one meanders from one room setting to the next, each one draws you in, wanting to linger and savor all that the eye beholds.

This spring at the Barclay Buttera Lifestyle Showroom, I was particularly drawn to this stylish buttery soft leather sofa which was just as comfortable as it was sophisticated in style.

Love..This market he also paired up with Eastern Accents to introduce a fabulous new bedding line (I don't think this man has time to sleep). To die for! Need I say more? Didn't think so.

The adorable Amy Jo Cosgrove has paired up with her mother in law, Barabara Cosgrove in selling her stunning & stylish lamp line, which sell in fine establishments such as Neiman Marcus & ABC Carpet & Home.....

There were so many beautiful, classy, and innovative lamps throughout it was hard to pick a favorite for sure.

So much to see, so little time.... this is just a sneak peak into the all the eye candy and remarkable people that we were able to catch a glimpse of.

Blue Skies…..Bring Them On In…Up On The Ceiling

When one gazes outside, who’s mood can not help but to lift at the thought of blue skies? So, why not illuminate the too often forgotten about element inside…..the ceiling? Let’s step inside and take a peak at the dynamic difference blue can make up on a ceiling.

Elizabeth Hague in this serene bedroom mixes a very relaxing palette complimented beautifully with the blue ceiling.

Veranda room by Nathan Turner A soothing palette of blue and beige sets the stage for relaxation in a “Belgian aesthetic.” European antiques and ethnic textiles are mixed with a combination of textures. Weighty elements are balanced against lighter ones, establishing a gracious equilibrium with shades of blues sprinkled throughout.

This tranquil palette and amazing view is absolutely heavenly bringing a feeling of calmness where one might linger for ~~hours~~ days at a time. Designed by Ali Schwarz.

Add Pizzazz With Painted Wood Floors

Rejuvenate tired old floors with a fresh coat of paint or stain. Whether with a pattern such as a geometric, stripe, solid, damask, skies the limit with the options, from classic, to contemporary to snazzy to whimsical. Painting and decorating the floor is a clever creative way to add personality to a space that's often overlooked.

Many layouts are geometric and can be quite complicated, figuring out the math would be in my mind something only a brilliant mathematician would be able to do. Brilliant is definitely what Billet Collins must be! To have them laid out precisely so (which they nail every time) makes all the difference in the world. If not laid out properly the pattern can certainly break the entire design.

Billet Collins preference of water based paints and glazes also allows them to feel better about using eco friendly products. And they are just as effective in use and durability as the more toxic oil paints. See how the glaze allows the wood grain to show through?

Welcome and wow all your guests by making a bold statement at the front entrance with a painted geometric floor. Small spaces like foyers or hallways can handle a large dose of pattern -- and even look larger with an expansive repeat.

Dreamy Daybeds

A New Year is quickly upon us…..where better to ponder those new resolutions and goals than in a place that merges comfort and style for some daytime repose than in a luxurious day bed.

With a nod to the past and an eye on contemporary design, the daybed calls forth our nesting instincts. More intimate than a settee, yet more formal than a bed, this venerable form invites us to relax, recline, and indulge in a little daydreaming.

A daybed can second as a couch, or as a spare bed, look and feel amazing doing any of these tasks.

A daybed is the ultimate indulgence, but it also remains a versatile piece for resolving design dilemmas. It's a confident name, daybed, a shameless admission of luxury and leisure. After all, what other piece of furniture suggests that its user engage in some activity at a particular moment in time? To sleep when the sun is out ... how cheeky. According to Tulsa designer Charles Faudree, the rules of placement are hardly rigid. "I love one in the middle of a room, where people can sit on both sides of it and face in all directions."

Because of the daybed's sculptural nature, it can handily stand alone, where a bench or banquette might have gone. "It can work in hallways, if the dimensions are not too deep, or on large stair landings," says Trimble.

Other manifestations of the form included the baldachin-draped "Turkish bed" which by day was placed horizontally against a wall, thereby converting into a couch. Similar arrangements were made for the alcove bed, which was highly decorated only on one side, and the well-padded fainting couch, a late-Victorian conceit. And Sigmund Freud's famous "consulting couch" was actually a daybed with a scroll and pad at one end, backed with loose cushions and pillows and draped in a richly patterned woven rug.

Holiday Decorating….Outdoors

Welcome…… Christmas and the festive season with modern and traditional holiday decor. Tis the season……..Decorating outdoors is always a treat to see, especially when accented against black doors.
With a layered palette of forest greens, soft silvers, and hints of brown and muted red, this front entryway has a festive vibe that's also subtle enough to last all winter long. A vibrant B.C. cedar garland decorated with dried fungi and silver balls adds color and lushness to the striking glass-paneled front door all winter long, while two urns overflowing with evergreens creates a symmetrical look for the front steps. To make similar urns, fill an urn with dirt and layer a variety of boughs, starting with Cedar and Douglas fir, then adding eucalyptus, ilex berries and magnolia. Branches are inserted into the centre of the urns to add dramatic height to the arrangement.

Round, Mirror, Mirror…..On The Wall

Before we get into mirror, mirror on the wall…… :) I am just back from a fantastic fun filled but exhausting in a very satisfying kind of way trip to the Fall Furniture Market, High Point, North Carolina. Attended with my BFF, the ever so talented, lively, loveable, Gloria De Lourdes Blalock of Blalock Interiors. In my opinion there is never a better way to experience market than with this amazing woman.
Besides perusing a lot of new fantastic merchandise, I also had the pleasure of seeing some old & some new friends. Having the opportunity of meeting some awesome peeps from the blog world in person for the first time…..(way cool!). Including, the fabulous Maria Killam who writes the coveted blog, Colour Me Happy. The radiant Lauren Leiss from Pure Style Home. The striking beauty and brains behind the exciting new publication Rue, Co-Founder and Editor in Chief, Crystal Gentilello, who also has a fantastic blog, Plush Palate. As well as the admired and fabulous Jennifer Sergernt of DC By Designs.

Also to my delight I again was able to see my idol, the much admired absolutely gifted talented and stylish, Mr. Barry Dixon (and yes, I look that dorky in every picture with him, I get so giddy when in the presence of that fantabulous man). The very funny (I was laughing pretty hard during our encounter) entertaining and lovely, Alexa Hampton. As well as the sharp and adorable all rolled into one, fashion designer of homes, Mr. Barclay Buttera. Last, but not least, the magnificent lively inspirational Mr. Eddie Ross.

NOW, onward, to……the subject at hand….

~~Sometimes~~, I mean, most of the time when we are looking for something in particular it doesn’t seem to be there. Then, when you are not looking, or had given up hope, or found that something already, then you tend to notice more of them, and poof, there they are. One of the things I seemed to be attracted to this market (trust me, there were many) were round shapes, that endless/infinity circle of love, or so it is in my mind, like round mirrors.

For example: The exceptional quality handmade mirrors crafted in the Good Ol’ USA (since 1970!) from Carver’s Guild. All their stunning mirrors (over 400 of them!) are made on site in West Groton, MA, with most styles are available in optional finishes.

Chandeliers in the Bathroom II

The question of whether chandeliers are a good option in the bathroom is over! After posting on this very same topic (here) some time back, it seems that some were wondering the same thing……well, wonder no more, the verdict is out……They look fabulous in any style of decor….see for yourself.

Better Homes & Gardens Kitchen & Bath Ideas The elegant shape and crystals of this graceful chandelier fit perfectly with the stunning wall panels and marble tile floor.

This gorgeous home, which left me breathless when I first gazed upon it, was introduced by Erin at House of Turquoise. The stunning home is one of her readers, Desiree Ashworth who has an inspiring blog full of French, Gustavian and Belgian decor, Decor de Provence. Jessica Lagrange Interiors. I just adore the milky color of the crystals on the chandelier. Wood floors and subway tiles add that timeless appeal and the contemporary wall sconces add pizzazz to this beautiful space.

The whole idea for this space was to create a sanctuary (success if you ask me). The focal point of the bathroom is the fabulous soaking tub that overlooks a lovely walled garden. You can lie there in absolute privacy and enjoy the fabulous light and the beautiful plants….

Ashley Whittaker Design With the use of a lantern in this traditional bright space filled with great storage makes it a fabulous retreat.

Barry Dixon adds a touch more romance in this dreamy bath with the perfectly chosen gorgeous ornate lantern.

No matter what your design style is, working in a fabulous chandelier into the space that we begin and end our day in is definitely a possibility.

Turtles & Tortoises…..Relics Revealed

May 24th 2010 “Save the Turtles Day”Kelly Wearstler at The Tides La Marea restaurant used 100’s of resin tortoise shells line the walls.

Love, ardor, admire yet all things from nature and life’s creatures. Another natural element in decor that is loved for it’s beautiful texture, interest, color, depth and all it’s markings that tortoise shells bring to a space. With that said, let it be known/stated/factual, that I do not in anyway condone/accept/advocate/believe in the ruthless killings of these protected animals! In fact, May 24th 2010 is “Save the Turtles Day”. THAT, I do whole heartily agree and support. The good news is, there are stunning resin replicas available, such as the ones that Kelly Wearstler used The Tides restaurant (photos above & below). But, if you are interested in the purchase of a (genuine) shell, please (I beg) you know for sure that you are dealing with a reliable source that can document it’s antiquity of a naturally shed shell.

These personal treasures, should be that….a special treasure loved for their gracefulness and elegance that they will add when used as a decorative accessory, yet observed and respected as if they were in a museum. Famed designer Kelly Wearstler at The Tides La Marea restaurant, an icon of Art Deco architecture of the 1930s, "The Diva of Ocean Drive" occupies an ideal niche across from Lummus Park along Miami's most upscale Atlantic oceanfront stretch. Kelly created an enchanting environment by adding layers of organic materials, luxurious textures and vintage inspired accents to create this fabulous space.

Seems like no post is complete unless sharing yet another fabulous space created by the super talented Barry Dixon, who uses both resin shells and antique (documented 100+ years) naturally shed shells in his interiors. Barry views and has a deference for these shells, as well as collections of sea shells from around the world, crustaceans, and butterflies – which are all under museum glass at his personal residence viewed as “museum-like animal studies”. Barry Dixon, displays a grouping of shells which take center stage in a custom built in bookcase.

American Tortoise Rescue To Celebrate World Turtle Day May 23, 2010
California Sanctuary Sponsors Day To Honor One of the World’s Oldest Creatures

Malibu, Calif. – American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) (http://www.tortoise.com), a nonprofit organization established 20 years ago for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle, is sponsoring International World Turtle Day on May 23^rd, 2010. The observance was created as an annual day to bring awareness of the protection of turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. It’s also designated as a day to celebrate these special creatures.

HISTORY & TID BITS ABOUT TORTOISE SHELL:
The earliest use of tortoiseshell dates back to decorative uses in China and Japan. Often, a whole turtle shell was lacquered and used as a bowl. The Ancient Greeks and early Romans also used tortoise shell in jewelry, to back hairbrushes and in hair ornaments.

Unfortunately, trade in true tortoiseshell had a devastating effect on the hawksbill turtle population. Though the hawksbill exists worldwide, primarily living in coral reefs, it is considered to be severely endangered. Concern for the possible extinction of the hawksbill, and also relative difficulty in harvesting tortoiseshell led in the early 20th century to celluloid (an early version of plastic) exhibiting the desirable tortoiseshell design. By the 1920s and 1930s, tortoiseshell frames for eyeglasses were primarily made of celluloid and not the actual turtle shell. Today, few areas export true tortoiseshell, in hopes the species will survive if it is not hunted.

It was widely used in the 1960s and 1970s in the manufacture of items such as combs, sunglasses, guitar picks and knitting needles. In 1973, the trade of tortoise-shell worldwide was banned under CITES ( the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. ) ( Text and images directly from Wikipedia )

Diamondback Terrapin, small turtle ( about 6 inches ) is found only in salt marsh environments. The Diamondback Terrapin was well on it's way to extinction in the early part of the 20th century owing to it's popularity as a gourmet item. Oddly enough, it was saved by Prohibition in the 1930s, since the recipe for terrapin required wine, which was no longer available. Fortunately for the Diamondbacks, the taste for them did not redevelop after Prohibition was repealed, and they have made a strong recovery.

Inspirations from Nature Come to Life

Inspiration & beauty is all around us, we just need to have our eyes open so as not to miss it. The passion of photography enables me to keep my eyes open just a little wider than they normally might be. I started a series with some of my photographs, how I see them through my eyes & in my mind how I imagine them them being created into something fabulous. It is a relation of an inspiration to me to a stunning space created by others. This concept was stimulated through the wonderful series that Anne @ The City Sage does with her fabulous Outfit to Room posts.

The gorgeous living space is by: Barry Dixon "I never tire of the helios gamut of colors. Glowing ember golds, blood oranges, and muted, winey clarets fold into one another when used together. A room in these colors is warm even before we turn up the thermostat." The extremely talented Mr. Barry Dixon is one of the most charming and eloquent men I have had the pleasure of meeting. Some of his inspirations come from childhood memories, his farm or his exquisite travels around the world and many other fabulous places and things he sees along the way. Whatever might move him it’s all fabulous.

The images may mean one thing to me, another to you – the meaning isn't important, how it makes us feel and what we choose to do with it……is. Brooks & Falotico designed this refreshing beach style home in Nantucket (one I could certainly find myself residing in without any problems :)). Introduced in the living space are "peacock" Blue Porcelain Lamps from Robert Abbey, making the relation between peacock and the space even more convincing (if there was a need to make it so) :)

Spring time, love it and purple is a color that I associate with this warm, pleasant exciting (everything budding & blooming) time of year. Purple is a color that is connected with wealth, power, intellect & magical abilities (what's not to love about that? :)) Purple is also the color of passion, it's complex, mysterious, tranquil, sophisticated & relaxing all at the same time.

Moss is definitely one of my favorite things to see, touch & be inspired by that can be found in natural setting. For it's velvety spongy texture, the depth, deep and dark, light and bright colors and beauty that I see in this natural element. Liz Forsyth Williams inviting bedroom is an example of how I am inspired by the fun fuzzy stuff called moss and how it can translate to a beautiful space.

~~Spring~~ Summer (early May and it’s already 90 degrees in Virginia) is in the air, and what better place to celebrate it then from a sunny sunroom (for now with the windows closed till all that icky green pollen goes away) this lovely time of year.

Sunrooms should have a feeling of openness and be bathed in light, they are a great place to relax, unwind and enjoy the sun’s sunshine and warmth without the harmful UVA exposure. A place to sit back, relax, read a book, a cool drink or enjoy a savory meal. It would be a treat in this sunroom, with it’s light pouring through the gorgeous arched windows, layers of linens, soft muslin window treatments, sumptuous leather, natural textures, stone floors & cool neutral color palette. LANTERNS…..Lighting the Way

All for the love of lanterns, I am going to start in the “foyer”, the first space one enters into the home welcomed by these lovely lanterns. This is appropriate for it is the beginning, where it all started for me, when early on I did a blog on using exterior lights inside the home. Upon researching this and in perusing fabulous images, I quickly realized I had a love, a passion so to speak for……. lanterns. It has been a love that has sat quietly by, not really given much thought to, but once I realized this the passion was aroused & quickly went into full bloom. Here you will find a few more divine images of how wonderful these light fixtures can light up & add splendor to the inside of the home.

Welcoming you in the entry way. Over at the marvelous blog, Things That Inspire, we are reminded of the fabulous talents of of Suzanne Kasler with the graceful lantern full of character in this beautiful entry, from House Beautiful.

The super talented Liz Williams uses a very simple open single light lantern in this elegant foyer with it’s soothing palette. Doesn’t she just look so cute? We love Liz.
Thom Filicia has a knack of creating handsome sophisticated spaces and his choice of lighting fixture in this rustic upstairs hallway is superb.

Let’s see what’s cooking in the kitchen:Rustic & Refined, just how I like it. This stunning kitchen in white with its iron table with marble top paired with Belgian 19th-c. chairs and custom cabinetry is pure perfection. French charcuterie table, lantern and over door carving, all 19thc. Not electrified, but the mood of romantic candlelight and pop this enchanting lantern adds to this space more than makes up for the lack of light it might provide. Veranda

Time to eat. Palmer Weiss. L.O.V.E this lantern along with the eclectic choices used in this dining room with the linen covered chairs and pop of color in the drapery treatments one might find themselves lingering here for quite some time.

I know, I know! We have all seen this house/room a million times in the blog world, but it is fabulous for so many reasons. Today we will call attention to Loi’s choice of the striking verdigris lantern in his dining room.

Atelier AM Andrew Law's creativity shines on this terrace at the fabulous DC Design House (the house in Chevy Chase, MD is a must see, benefiting Children’s National Medical Center, through May 9, 2010). Refined and sophisticated space with it’s classic architecture is an outdoor living room worthy of this historic home. I just had to include this fun happy lantern from Urban Electric Co.. Available in all Benjamin Moore paint colors, but in this turquoise it sings and contrast perfectly with the red shutters.

Kevin Fitzgerald: Has been painting for over 30 years, born in Washington, D.C., Kevin was drawn to painting from early childhood. Citing the 19th century Romantics and Tonalists as inspiration, the work is both assuaging and triumphant in depicting the divine landscape. Fields, farms, marshes, and ponds all comprise the working vocabulary of a painter who glorifies the Great Mid-Atlantic region.
There has yet to be a piece that artist Kevin Fitzgerald that I have seen that hasn’t moved me on some level or another. The feeling when seeing one of his paintings, each one has evoked a strong sense of connecting to the stunning pieces they are. Someday, someday, oh someday……I will be lucky enough to have one of his beautiful works of art gracing one of my walls where endless gazing would occur. For now, I breathe in the beauty of this man’s talents through galleries and other fortunate people that are in possession of his amazing art.

Janet Slom an artist, resides in Westport Connecticut. She has a gift, one where she is very much connected to her art, and paints from her heart and soul. The very first second I glanced at her art, I sensed an intense and amazing feeling of serene beauty in which her soul radiates and is poured into each piece.

Her journey in life, her inspirations and her energy she creates ethereal paintings, aptly called, Heaven & Earth.
The paintings abstractly interpret the moment when sunlight, earth, and sky meet in a stunning gorgeous burst. “Everyday I go for an early-morning walk just as the dawn breaks, and the beauty is so overwhelming, it is profound,” says Janet about the series. “It is a reminder that all we really have is this moment.”

the dance of light on the water, it’s about pondering all of that childlike wonder and gratitude and seeing this very moment because it’s all very fragile and very fleeting. It’s quick.”

Her works seem to captivate, entrance you, which seem to have this magical glow.

Delightful, opulent, casual, formal, light & airy, bold & beautiful, refined & relaxed…..dining spaces at their best. By exploring some of the elements in these rooms you may find yourself wanting to linger just a little longer, savoring the meal, the company and enjoying the atmosphere.
Erin at House of Turquoise introduced us to this stunning home of one of her readers, Desiree Ashworth who has an inspiring blog, Decor de Provence. This lovely home is in Provo, Utah and the amazing photography from Ashlee Raubach. The room has a natural ease that soothes the spirit, with a stunning sparkling chandelier, cream upholstered nail head accented chairs against the rich herringbone wood floors create a vibe that is elegant yet rustic.

Dining areas seem to lean towards more casual today, mixed with a touch of elegance creating a relaxed setting can be achieved by mixing styles and finishes, along with adding pieces that have a warm patina.The super talented Brooke Giannetti on her blog, Velvet & Linen shows us how she spruced up her dining area with a new lantern, a zinc industrial table, and a mix of fabulous eclectic chairs (custom, new & family heirlooms) which all sit on top of a jute rug create a calming, yet fresh and inviting atmosphere.

LAYERING: with linens

This dining space evokes the spirit of a French farmhouse that is rustic in nature, but with a sophistication all it's own. Draping the table with it’s relaxed layers and the slips and cushions on the chairs and lovely crystal chandelier will find their guests waiting around for seconds.

John Saladino layers the table in luxurious linens which imbues a classic look that is both refined and glamorous in both of these stunning rooms.

Eric Prokesh uses an opulent layered skirted table surrounded by gorgeous French Louis XVI chairs is a recipe for a classic elegant dining room.

SLIPS (and not the ones for under your skirt) for the chairs: Amelia Handegan created this formal dining room with it’s crystal chandelier, gilded ornate mirror, and stunning statue, is made to feel a little less dressy by slip covering the chairs with a short pleated skirt and button details.

Solis Betancourt used restful colors in this dining room along with wonderful detailed slip covers, rich wallpaper and an elegant chandelier creating for a very soothing comfortable feeling.

Using a touch of a zebra pattern in a space can add a bit of whimsy, a touch of class (maybe a bit of a stretch for some) and a nice pop that most rooms can certainly use a little of. You don’t need much, for a little bit of zebra goes a long way.

Oh, how I love thee. When other’s might claim to dream of genie, I dream of many things, but of late, it is of this beautiful bed by Edward Ferrel/Lewis Mittman.

It all started with the first image (featured on many blogs before) that started me day dreaming. I knew immediately……I was in love. Yes, it was love at first sight….ummm, okay, I admit, it may be odd to some of you that I have this feeling towards a piece of furniture. But, if you are passionate about something, love comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and you learn to just go with the flow of these things.

Interior designer Liz Williams created this stunning space in a charming home in the Ansley Park area of Atlanta using the bed in a medium finish which contrasts beautifully against the simple elegant fabric.

Ceilings: Painted, Papered and Pampered

Go ahead, look up, there it is, the ceiling…….that important component to a room that seems all too often to be neglected, the poor forgotten ceiling. Ceiling treatments are an element to a room that with a few simple touches, or substantial ones, the room’s overall feel can be impacted in a dramatic way.

When color surrounds you, when it embraces the entire room from top to bottom, it creates a soothing atmosphere especially when done in a calming palette. Kelley Proxmire of Kelley Interior Design created this stunning dining room on the Eastern Shore. The mirror reflects the muted tones and the warmth that the the golden tan ceiling adds to the space.

Steven Gambrel at a seaside retreat in an upstairs getaway, applied texture to the ceiling which wraps the room in softening the space and the angles of the room.

Tracy Morris Designs accents a curved ceiling with a beautiful antiqued treatment adding character and depth to an elegant room.

Like an empty canvas, the ceiling can become a work of art, creating a striking design feature that finishes a space.

Suzanne Kasler demonstrates this brilliantly in a foyer with the subtle damask pattern in tones of persimmon and camel wallpaper used on the ceiling.

Bedrooms are great rooms to consider when treating the ceiling. For while we are horizontal, we naturally tend to spend a good bit of time looking up.

Amanda Nisbet Design applied a golden geometric pattern which adds a dazzling dimension to this colorful bedroom.

Camille Saum creates a soft radiant glow with the warmth from the color on the walls (Orangery by Farrow & Ball) along with the hand-stenciled ceiling and hand-painted squares on the floor.

Sally Steponkus & Heather Safferstone collaborated on a vibrant sitting room with a crisp, urban look by using a deep taupe-gray (Farrow & Balls: Mouse Back) walls punched with yellow (Farrow & Ball:Dayroom Yellow) ceiling, and white trim (Farrow &Ball:Wimborne White). This created for a very striking backdrop for the room.

Elizabeth Hague Interiors
in this stunning dining room creates a sensuous mood with the restful soft palette and a beautiful choice of color for the ceiling. One could certainly linger in this room for long periods at a time.

In this salon, Katie Leede-McGloin creates a glamorous yet intimate space using metallic elements with the silver bowl, curvy sculpture, glittery pillows and gold leaf horse heads. These help wrap and balance the room along with the metallic painted ceiling treatment.

I love the bold contrast of the black and white accented with the soft grey blue and muted green tones that Jessica Lagrange Interiors used in this happy space.

A bold statement was created by
McGill Design Group from Toronto, Ontario, when they added moldings and painted the ceiling black. Design Sponge featured a dramatic before and after of this dining room.

Barclay Butera used raffia on the ceiling in his family room for a neutral backdrop to allow flexibility if color change is desired down the road. Infusing texture and interest through out the room by treating the ceiling adds to and defines this comfortable space.

Elizabeth Gordon Studio used a strong blue and gold pattern on the ceiling that enlivens as well as adds strength to the space.

Ballroom Blue by Farrow & Ball wrapped up onto high ceiling grounds the space and helps to create an intimate feel in this large open family room. A Winter Mantle of Hope

She tells us a beautiful story of hope, desires and dreams in describing how this had influenced her striking mantle decorations she displayed this winter. The story is very meaningful and will have you wanting for more, so please grab a big cup of joe or tea to enjoy as Gloria explains in detail her:

A Winter Mantle of Hope

Having been born in Cuba and leaving the island in 1970 at the age of 6, I remember all too well all of the things we had to ‘go with out’. When we arrived in this country, my parents, two brothers and I held hands as we were instructed by my father to kneel and kiss the ground. With this single act, he announced that we were now to pledge allegiance only to this country… for it was the United States that had taken us in and had offered us a chance at a new life. So for the last 40 years, that is what we have proudly done. However, in the last several years, many of my thoughts return to my birthplace and to the way of life that those left behind have led since our departure. Not a single day goes by when I don’t say ‘thank God that we live in America.’

This past Halloween, my mantle offered a sense of decay. As with most decorations made for this specific holiday, they were dark, brooding and ‘spooky’. I tried to correlate this feeling to what I imagine the mood to be throughout this Caribbean island. For many years, the architecture throughout the land appears to wear the vestiges of time. Rot, decay, and negligence has left what used to be a beautiful landscape… tainted with a sadness that has been well publicized since the onset of socialism.

So while during the fall season I tried to capture the mood there today, during this winter season I want to elevate the vignette under my map of Cuba into something that represents the potential and hope that I hold in my heart for Cuba’s future.

Within the plateau of decorations, I have added coral and shells as representational items that can be found there. Beyond that I peppered the branches of both white orchids and Manzanita trees with red and green Christmas balls hanging from cream silk ribbon. A garland graces the top of the framed poster and also runs the length of the mantle, falling to the ground on either side. Small white lights remind me of the same ones used in the trees of the Intercontinental Hotel where my parents honeymooned in Havana. And upon close observation, the starfish appear to be dancing salsa if you could hear the music playing while viewing the mantle.

A single coral Christmas tree with a small starfish topper proudly holds center stage. This was a gift, to me, by none other than your blogger, Laura Jens. Knowing my love for all things inspired by and from the ocean, she knew this would make a wonderful Christmas gift for me.

Below the mantle, hangs a single ornament depicting the ‘Real Reason for the Season’. It is a glass-enclosed painting of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus.

One of the things taken from the Cuban people, was their freedom of religion. Over the last several years, there has been some resurgence, but it is not to the extent that it was before. So again, it is my hope that Cuba’s future, encompass all of the magic that I tried to create.

Epiphany is on January 6^th, and it is the date in most Latin American countries that Jesus’ birth is celebrated. As children, our gifts were brought to us by the ‘Three Wise Men’ and placed under our beds. From what I’ve been told, this tradition only takes place now in some homes, but not in all. It is not only financially impossible, but something that is government restricted. So here again, lies an example of why I carry only the best wishes in my heart for its future freedom. This wish, incidentally, is not only for Cuba, but for all places worldwide where oppression limits dreams and government restrictions hold back hope.

May the shores that lie so close to the U.S. be blessed with not only the beauty of its white sands, coral reefs and amazing shells… but the magic that it deserves at the start of 2010 and always……

Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle…. a new Life for reclaimed objects

While thinking about the New Year that lies ahead and considering what some of the objectives will be, I also ponder what from the past worked well that might be used again. There seems to be some things in life that work just as they were, and others enhance when given a new role.

Vintage objects used in diverse ways create interesting ideas that breathes new life for a fresh inventive look.

This stunning butler's Flatware display is by artist Adam Smith. Made from antique, solid sterling flatware, handmade bronze frame, and antique tintypes, presented in a wood case with magnets on back of pieces.

Vintage drawer pulls from dressers attached to the wall make perfect ornate hooks for keys and reading glasses. Adding curtain clips works great to attach papers or business cards.

Old ornate metal heating vents are too pretty not to be repurposed. Hang one on the wall for a great way to display your favorite magazines.

There were so many great recycled items at the Greenhouse Charity Works House in Mclean Virginia. One of those were the lovely recycled glass bottle pendants that were used in the mudroom. Custom Design Concepts Architecture + Interiors

Karin over at Your Cozy Home fascinated by oil lamps at the flea market found a creative way to use them without having to bother with the oil and lighting them.

Turn of the century spool or tool chests are great ways to store silverware, placemats, coasters, or retrofitted for jewelry.

We all have seen them (maybe even owned them), those hideous light fixtures from the 80’s & 90’sthat once hung not so proudly in homes. Breathe new life into them but transforming them into terrariums.

May we all find the resources we need to make 2010 a blissful year.

Holiday Decor at the Blair House

Across the street from the White House, the Blair House is treated with royalty with beautiful festive holiday decor.

Blair House has stood facing the White House for more than 180 years, witness to events of extraordinary importance for the nation and her people. For decades, the rooms of this stately home have played an even more active role, serving United States foreign policy as a gracious residence, meeting place and sanctuary for visiting heads of state.

The Blair house gets decked out for the holidays with the generosity of designers who were called in for help by Magazine Publishers of America to volunteer in designing holiday makeovers on 17 historic spaces. With only two short weeks notice from a half dozen lifestyle magazines, including Martha Stewart Living, This Old House, Traditional Home, Better Homes & Gardens, Mother Earth News and Natural Home. With such a huge task and so little time to create, let’s see how they pulled it off fabulously, shall we?

Martha Stewart Living designed a tiny replica of Blair House with lights in the windows.

With EXTREME care, they artfully decked the halls around the $100 million dollars worth of American antiques. No pressure or anything.

Lynni Megginson from L&M Designs used jeweled poinsettias, gold and crème silk ribbons, silver snowflakes and gold glitter "collars" on the reindeer adorned with pink glass ornaments on the fireplace mantel. Every single teeny tiny present under the reindeer on top of the sideboard has a miniature hand painted ornament tied to it.

The deadline was to finish for a special evening reception at the State Department that would be honoring families of government employees currently serving unaccompanied tours overseas that are in places to dangerous to have their families be with them.

They were certainly treated to some beautiful decorations that surely delighted them all. Along with a few delicious looking treats from the clan at Martha Stewart Living might have left them feeling a little hungry too.

Matching the colors of coral and pale green in the Blair House Dining room by making a candy theme, including a gingerbread Blair House along with lollipops and a pink feather tree hung with ribbon candies.

In the Truman Study, clocks were turned back to replicate a traditional old fashioned Christmas setting. Editors from This Old House contacted the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum in where they unearthed a list of Christmas gifts President Truman (who lived at the Blair House while it was being renovated) had received in 1951.

The staff at This Old House placed hand-knitted socks, vintage razor blades, a 1948 Life magazine, a soundtrack from "Paint Your Wagon, framed old photos of Truman, hand made ornaments and hung them on the tree. Three stockings, embroidered Harry, Bess and Margaret, were hung at the mantel.

Traditional Home magazine called in designer Barry Dixon to dress up the Lee Dining Room.

Barry set the table using monogrammed Blair House linen napkins mixed with colorful china and gift packages.

In the Lee Drawing Room, editors from Martha Stewart Living created ornaments based on the stylized birds on the 18th-century green Chinese wallpaper. Whimsical birds perch on the gold gilded branches that create an arch across the room. A peacock adorns the top the Christmas tree.

I am very grateful to all the designers and magazine publications that during these economic hard times were able to offer so much. As a result of their hard work brightening up the holiday for the deserving families. The men and woman that sacrifice so much to serve our country which we are very proud of, wishing all of them, their families and everyone a very happy holiday.

HOLIDAY DECORATING in a soft palette

When one usually thinks of festive decorating for the holidays, we might think of the contrast colors of red and green. But, during the holiday season many might feel their stress levels rising, it can’t be just me……can it? To see what seems to be the latest trend in holiday decorating of fresh crisp white and off-whites contrasted with green is a welcomed look that creates a soothing, calming feeling.

May you find some inspiration that might tempt/motivate you to create something to surround yourself in a soothing environment in this approaching too quickly holiday (again, is it just me that feels that way?)

Designer Holiday Decorations for the Georgetown Jingle 2009

Designed to Fight Childhood Cancer

Fourteen diverse and talented designers participated this year in the Georgetown Jingle, a notable cause that they are all honored to be a part of. The Georgetown patients of Georgetown University Hospital’s Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program will benefit from their support and hard work ensures that families facing cancer will have brighter holidays to come.

The designer’s magnificent holiday trees are on display at the Four Seasons in Washington DC, are infused with warmth and spirit, and overflowing with creativity and imagination. The trees will be auctioned off for this great charity. I am very happy to report that at least two of the trees have already been sold prior to the big event that will take place at the Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC, Sunday December 13, 2009.

Each designer was touched even more so, for this year they were each paired with a young cancer patient. Its motivation is evident; every tree seems to capture the essence of each child’s individuality.

Below are just three of the designers and some of their thoughts on creating magnificent trees for this wonderful cause.

First up, the team for David Iatesta:

Just as David Iatesta’s team put the finishing touches on their striking driftwood tree, a doctor who is regular VIP guest of the Four Seasons wanted to know which tree was the most expensive. Dr. Alexander Karp of Palantier Technologies then purchased the tree for $15,000 in which he generously donated back to be given to the young patient or to display at the hospital to be enjoyed.

Matt Quinn the lead designer for the driftwood tree is Iatesta’s chief executive officer, said the tree took 500 man hours to construct. The tree is assembled from driftwood collected throughout the summer on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The perfect trunk for the tree came from a 9-foot-long salvaged cedar log that had been wonderfully weathered to a silvery gray. It is strung like one of Iatesta’s exquisite chandeliers, using $3,000 worth of European crystal, and lit with the help of 20 battery packs hidden under the tree skirt.

Next,

Gloria de Lourdes Blalock of Blalock Interiors tree “Let There be Light”.

Gloria says,“This title provides the association I have always felt is inherent between the words ‘light’ and ‘hope.’ For if we shed light on the issues associated with finding a cure for cancer, then we have equally put hope in the hearts of many. The many individuals that make the Georgetown Jingle such a success are doing just this. They are all pillars of light carrying the hopes for a cure in their tireless efforts to fundraise for this amazing event”. ‘Let There Be Light’ and in its wake leave a trail of hope for the smiling faces and the tender hearts of our young heroes it has chosen to enlighten!”

Gloria’s source of inspiration for her tree, Eliza. “She is a beautiful and brave little girl who battled with Lymphoma when she was only weeks old. Today, thanks to the care of doctors, such as Dr. Aziza Shad at Georgetown University Hospital, Eliza is a healthy little girl whose cancer has been confirmed to be in full remission”.

Gloria’s tree has been sold to a generous gentleman who purchased the tree she designed last year. He is so impressed with Gloria, her talent, her spirit and enthusiasm that he purchased the tree sight unseen.

Gloria’s tree showcases some of the holiday décor available from Pottery Barn on a beautiful ten foot Sugar Pine tree.

Last but not least,

Lynni Megginson of L&M Designs “Aspen Holiday” stunning tree is all about her adorable patient she was paired with, Nicholas. “Nicholas loves Christmas, he loves everything about Christmas and has the magic of Christmas in his heart. I wanted to evoke the dream of what Christmas would be – all the winter elements, combined with the fact that the tree is done in his honor”. “Nicholas is one of the bravest little boys I have ever met. He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 1 ½. I took the spark in Nicholas’ eyes and translated it into a tree design that truly evokes the magic of a Traditional Christmas”.

Snow covered branches and bird nests, oversized sugar pine cones and puffy snowflake ornaments with yards and yards of plaid ribbon garland, iced twig clusters and festive holly stems all in a traditional red and green palette.

About Georgetown Jingle:

In 2006, the Georgetown Jingle was created by the Four Seasons Hotel Washington, JDS Designs, Inc., The Washington Design Center, and the Georgetown BID to raise money for pediatric oncology programs in the Washington DC Metro area. Thanks to the generosity of area businesses, restaurants, and design professionals, the Georgetown Jingle has raised $970,000 for the Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, Blood & Marrow Transplantation Program at Georgetown University Hospital.
The purpose of this family-friendly event is to celebrate the fashions of the holiday season and to support families battling cancer. Support will be extended in 2009 to include Georgetown Hospital’s pediatric bone marrow transplantation program & their Childhood Cancer Survivorship Program, both led by Dr. Aziza Shad.

Raising Money For Autism With Talent & A Love for Animals

Every once in awhile with no explanation, sometimes with no warning, there is something that moves us, that finds us inspired, giving us a a desire to share with others. This can be a moment, a visual or perhaps a touching story. That moment happened to me recently as I was perusing one of my all time favorite publications, Traditional Home. The November 2009 issue is filled with pages of the 2009 Classic Woman Awards, which share the stories of the devoted women that are caring and the ways they give back. These women are all inspirational with their amazing stories, and one of these women, Kathryn Finney, a talented artist from Des Moines, is the heart warming story I am touched/inspired by that I would like to share.

Artist Kathryn Finney is a loving mom of an 11 year old son, Arthur who is autistic. Kathryn, a devoted mom, speaks fondly about her son when asked to share some words. “Arthur is a blessing and teaches me something every day. He is not very verbal, but works hard to please us/his teachers and enjoys his schoolwork. He has a long way to go to develop the skills to enable him to function independently in this world. It is, I'm sure, every mother's dream for normalcy for their child. This has always been our normal and we do believe there is something that he can contribute and we will find those skills and nurture him.”

One way she helps her son Arthur develop his skills is through participation in dog agility training as part of his therapy. Kathryn feels extremely blessed for the help she receives with Arthur’s therapies and is gratified by any way she is able to give back. She combines her love of animals and her talents to create wonderful pet portraiture. 25% of the price of all prints purchased from Finney Fun now through December 31, 2009 will go to OAR (Organization for Autism Research) to benefit those with autism. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, is a neurological disorder that impairs a person's ability to communicate and form relationships with other people.

Kathryn’s pet portraiture began 12 years ago when she painted her own Old English Sheepdog. Animal owners can submit favorite photos of their beloved pets to give her an idea of the pet’s personality to allow her to transform them into a memorable painting that all pet owners will cherish.

Kathryn’s fun, happy, touching art would fit in many places in a home, especially in a child’s room, where they would be sure to put a smile on their faces.

Kathryn Finney shows her caring and kindness in more ways than one. “With Arthur being autistic, I don't find it unusual to try to do something for the helping and inner healing of children with autism. I starting raising funds for the Organization for Autism Research three years ago by running the Chicago Marathon. I thought, if I'm running, I should see if there is a relevant charity to contribute something for my efforts. The response to a short letter to family and friends was so overwhelming that three years later, I've raised over $23,000 and it continues.”

Her generosity is also apparent in her volunteer work with a local Human Services agency where she teaches several autistic adults how to paint. “They come to my studio garage, have fun, and learn the rewards of painting. You would be amazed at their abilities. Often, I'm humbled by their talent.”

Kathryn also works with photographs to create colorful garden plans and landscape drawings to create beautiful works of art.

Another notable mention raising money for Autism research, awareness and care, is:
The Acoustic for Autism Compilation, featuring compelling independent (and in some cases, unreleased) music specifically chosen to convey themes of hope and healing.

I highly recommend the purchase of these beautiful songs worthy of a great cause. They are available everywhere digital music is sold, such as I-Tunes and Amazon.

Acoustic for Autism is a collaboration between childhood friends Louis Gendron and Michael Cusanelli. After 20 years, they reconnected and discovered the many things they still had in common, including careers in the entertainment industry, a continued passion for music, and the way autism had touched both of their families.

Acoustic for Autism relies solely on word of mouth, so please tell others about this lovely music, and of Louis and Michael’s generosity to donate 100% of the net proceeds to autism charities for research, awareness and care.

Fall Inspiration & Ghoulish Halloween Magic

Tis the season…………….OK, maybe not just yet, although it is approaching a little too quickly for many of us. So, prior to cutting down the tree and setting out the stockings, let’s focus on burgundy and golden hued tree lined streets, The wonderful time of fall, the inspirations conjured by nature’s bounty, and how a little imagination can go a long way.

For true design inspiration on how to decorate in style for this spooky holiday, we turn to my dear friend Gloria de Lourdes Blalock’s Halloween Mantel. The following paragraphs are in her own words: (pic: Gloria loving fall)

“With each and every season comes a fresh start, especially in the fall. On September 1st, no matter the year, the wind blows differently and slightly cooler. My thoughts turn to Autumn’s candy-corn colors, pumpkin patches, and the smell of wood burning fireplaces wafting under an early evening sky. As the leaves begin to turn and cascade from the tall oak and maple trees, the once densely leafed branches begin to show their skeletal forms. And in these, and because of these, I find inspiration in the shadows they create.

For my 2009 Halloween Mantel, Manzanita branches anchor the vignette and help ground the grouping of ghoulishly inspired accessories. Two black crows perch on the branches and watch the skeleton heads as candles flicker in their midst. An antique glass decanter filled with colored water, sits next to a fabulous bottle of Bubble Bath, and two crystal glasses sit to their left. The idea for this came from the phrase” ‘Pick Your Poison’. By positioning them side by side, it offers a subtle temptation for the not so feign at heart. An arrangement of dried white roses in an old Wedgewood black vase, serve as a backdrop for a small picture of a single eye. The eye watches you as you approach, and it sets an eerie mood around the display.

Finally, the old map of Cuba was the perfect background for a season of change. A feeling of decay looms below it on my mantel. It is my personal hope that the poison that surrounds my birthplace, will find the joy it deserves in my next mantel and Laura’s future post: The hope, love, and light of the final Christmas in the first decade of the new millennium. And for Cuba… and for this Cuban born interior designer… a 2010 filled with the winds of change and a new beginning and branching out …on many different levels and in each and every season it will celebrate!”

Exterior Lighting for Interiors

After much thought/debate on non rated UL fixtures in a bathroom from a previous post Chandeliers Brightening up the Bathroom the thought ran through my mind…….”just what exactly are some attractive options of exterior fixtures that can be used on the inside?” With that question looming, it felt like it was time to source and share some products that are rated for wet locations that would compliment many interior settings. Along with these products are several (OK many) inspiration rooms with fixtures that have the look (or maybe are) of exterior fixtures. Since this concept seems to be quite popular, there is an abundance of wonderful items and images shown and it was hard to limit the choices.

Welcome, let’s see how an outdoor styled fixture can invite guests into your home.

Multiple interesting shaped pendants hang over the island and in front of the windows giving the feel of a rustic yet sophisticated space with it’s leather bar stools and dark wood cabinets.

Some rustic and refined pendants that could be comfortable lighting up any interior.

The iron pendant lights over the granite island adds warmth and character to this elegant kitchen.

This generously sized cathedral-shaped fixture from Restoration Hardware would look very much at home indoors, in fact…..

This striking kitchen displays a large lantern over the wood top island that resembles the one from RH.

Corbett Lighting offers an attractive scroll detail on their outdoor Vineyard Hill Collection. A pair of like lanterns hang beautifully in this charming kitchen.

TIME TO EAT:
RIVER DUNES IDEAS HOUSE: The interior designer uses large-scale accents for instant impact. Here, the bold oversize hanging lantern will illuminate the space with its size and proportion create a simple yet graphic look.

Elle Decor
The men behind Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters give 'eclectic' a new attitude in their Manhattan Apartment dining room with an antique French lantern over an English table with a billiard bench.

Loi Thai, owner of the ultra chic antiques shop Tone on Tone in Bethesda, illuminates his light and airy dining room with an oversized dramatic lantern. Grounding the space balances out the gorgeous table.

An assortment of iron and glass fixtures that would work nicely in a range of interior settings. A classic vintage looking lantern paired with gorgeous old French door cabinet creates a nice ambiance in which to enjoy a meal. Cottage Living.

The very affordable Pottery Barn Armonk Chandelier would work in various places throughout the home.

True to the Belgian style, this family room is comfortable and inviting but without a lot of furniture. Ancient French doors open into a custom media cabinet and provide the room's dramatic focal point. With the hefty antique iron chandelier competing for it’s presence to be noticed.

And……the living room that needs no introduction, Joni’s from Cote De Texas, who wishes she had made the switch from ceiling fan to lantern sooner. Joni recently did a blog on her Top 10 Design Elements #5 Lighting and as always offers a wealth of information and displays an abundance of gorgeous images.

Let’s go find a good book: Barry Dixon creates a cozy retreat in a expansive upstairs landing by grounding it with a massive lantern.

TIME TO WASH UP:

Barry Dixon (again, what can I say, I love that man!) the luxurious rustic & refined lantern adds yet another romantic element to this already dreamy divine bath.

I love these exterior fixtures by Troy from their Portola Collection. With their hand forged iron, they have a vintage somewhat Parisian flair to them that would work well in a bath, sunroom, or porch. But, would also look just at home over a great dining table or kitchen nook, or even a bedroom.

UL rated lights can be found in many shapes, sizes, and styles, including oodles of wall scones that work well in many interior applications.

Phoebe Howard from Cote De Texas I am just crazy in love with the pattern on the floor.

TME TO RETIRE: Where shall we lay our head to rest?
Phoebe Howard (yes, again, I love her too :)) Imbues a nice balance of elegance and casualness by introducing lanterns into the bedroom.

Jessica Lagrange adds a touch more femininity by introducing an attractive scrolled lantern over the bed.

In a city apartment Phoebe Howard uses a beautiful glass lantern in this relaxing bedroom.

There are also wonderful opportunities to find an old fixture and have it wired, updating it to code. Not rated for wet locations, but these are just too pretty that it would be a shame not to share them.

South of Market has some amazing antique lanterns and other light fixtures sourced from France and Belgium. Since the stores conception, the hunt is ongoing for the rare, the beautiful and the can’t live without items for the home.

Also, not intended for outdoors are these lovely lanterns that are reinterpreted for indoor use are Restoration Hardware’s replica of a 19th-century Italian gas streetlight is true to its Amalfi Coast roots and would make a substantial statement. in any space.
